Unit of Competency FWPWPP3232 - Operate a heat roll bonding machine to laminate or veneer engineered wood panel surfaces
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to operate heat roll bonding machines and ancillary equipment to apply laminate or veneer to engineered wood panel surfaces in a manufacturing facility. The unit applies to individuals who work as production operators and technicians in an engineered wood panel facility. Operators generally work under broad or limited direction to complete routine activities related to their own work, and take responsibility for their work. All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria
Element: Prepare for lamination work
  • Review work order, workplace health and safety requirements, environmental protection practices and emergency procedures for lamination operation and, where required, check with appropriate personnel
  • Identify and report hazards and use personal protective equipment according to workplace requirements and health and safety legislation to maintain safe work practices
  • Obtain the type and quantity of engineered wood panel and laminate or veneer to be laminated from the production process
  • Select production process according to work order

Element: Apply laminate or veneer
  • Use equipment according to workplace health and safety procedures, manufacturer instructions and environmental protection practices
  • Complete pre start-up equipment checks to ensure operational effectiveness
  • Load veneer or laminate and engineered wood panel and feed in the correct sequence to suit planned assembly
  • Adjust spreader stations to deliver material according to required engineered wood panel cross-section distribution
  • Adjust glue feed, spread and tack level regularly, apply glue to engineered wood panel evenly and ensure panel remains free of foreign material
  • Check heat rolling process regularly to prevent creases, bubbles and other surface defects
  • Monitor laminate or veneer routinely for the position, adhesion, contamination, finish and trim tolerances
  • Transfer finished engineered wood panels for further processing according to workplace health and safety procedures
  • Dispose of sub-standard material according to environmental protection practices

Element: Shut down and clean equipment
  • Coordinate shutdown with other line operators according to workplace health and safety procedures
  • Strip, clean and replace gluing equipment, rollers, cauls, screens and handling equipment
  • Check cutters or blades for bluntness or damage and remove and replace according to manufacturer recommendations
  • Keep machine clear of dust and debris according to workplace health and safety procedures
  • Record and report production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
